Overview
Students will learn how to use well-validated, standard methods to collect behavior data on human subjects. These methods are used to describe what people do daily at work or at home, who they interact with, their biological states, how they are feeling in a variety of contexts, where they travel to, and how they interact with others. Towards the end of the course new behavior tracking instruments based on smartphone and biometric sensors will be introduced.
Key Benefits:
- These methods are widely used in applied fields.
- Lessons are structured to deal with practical issues
- Use of smartphone technology for data collection
What’s Included:
- History of the field and its impact
- Advantages of the method over standard data collection techniques
- Case studies of behavior observations research
- Guidance in tailoring behavior observations to concrete problems
- The construction of observational databases
Course Modules
Explore the foundations of behavioral observation, including its historical development and various data collection approaches such as time diaries and spot checks. This module sets the stage for understanding how to observe actions in real-world settings.
Who this course is designed for
This course is for anyone working in businesses or research organizations where the collection of accurate behavior data is needed instead of or in addition to superficial question-and-answer surveys. In addition, new smartphone technology supports the automated collection of data on physical activity and physiological states. data are a boon to any organization working on health research, delivery, and monitoring.
Outcomes
By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:
- Identify different behavior observation methods
- Understand the strengths and weaknesses of different observation methods
- Collect data using direct and indirect behavior observation methods
- Learn how to code data using standard behavior classification protocols
- Set-up and structured behavior database using BORIS software
